Even thought it's winter in the coast of Maine, commerce still flows, and on Maine's islands life goes on. There are many islands that are inhabited year-round, and there was one notable additon to Isle Au Haut this weekend, 2 llamas, which were brought over by boat.
Most of the inhabited islands were built up in the early part of the century and people still hold on to them, their island identity is prized. There are some that occasionally come up for sale, and there are three properties for sale on the Island currently. 2 of them are curently at 1 million plus but there is one that has a guest house for under that. The view is still that million dollar view. And you are sharing the island with 2 new llamas!

Many people talk about the US economy and how it is paid for by China's buying of US debt, so our fates are linked. Recent news is that China's having difficulties, that their "housing bubble has burst"

China's Real Estate Bubble Bursts -- Good or Bad?
Prices are declining, whis is not good news for the housing markets, as we have seen here, if you can't sell your house it affects many aspects of your life, and therefore of the economy. China is saying it will increase pressure on the banks, which is never good news. Is the market just adjusting? Imports are sure to keep going down, with anti-Chinese sentiment here in the US. Can they survive the adjustment and what does that bring us?

As the mother of a 13 yr old, and also a high school freshman, we are all wondering what they kids will do with themselves as they get older. This white one one is my favorite, I love the entrance. Very grand. As I was raised in the south I appreciate cobblestones, I have always wanted a cobblestone driveway but here in Maine thats almost impossible, they are too hard to clear snow off of. I have heard it is possible to install driveway heaters down the length of your driveway to thaw the snow but that must be very expensive.
Most of us have learned to accept that Maine is a unique place, with it's own challenges, and it's own benefits.

The Morse High School boosters have a tradition of "flocking" locals, when you are flocked you make a donation to the High School. It is one the coolest things. Word around the Wiscasset High Schools is they are going to start "gnoming" locals. Can't wait to see that! Pictures will follow, I promise!

My friend Wenonah's new kitties, from the Lincoln County's animal shelter, in the free kitty giveaway they had a few weeks ago. They are very sweet and cuddly. There are plenty of more kitties and even dogs at local shelters, stop by and see if you have more room in your heart for one of these darlings.

Our new kitty Miss Kitteh, she is a 1 year old medium hair that used to live in an apartment with a dog and small children but found it all just too much. We have plenty of room for her and she does big circles throughout the house at night. She is blind in one eye, no one seems to know when or how.. thats ok, she is very sweet and cuddly. Yes thats extra toes on her feet. We are not the only ones with a new kitty, it seems there are a lot of kitties going to new homes this fall. The hoarders cats that were taken in this summer have all been cleared for new homes and many mid-coast resdients have taken them in. Lots of love to go around.

Daily Economic Update: Jobless Claims, Housing Starts

June 16, 2011 by Selma Hepp, Research Economist for National Assoc. of Realtors.

Each day the Research staff takes a look at recently released economic indicators, addressing what these indicators mean for REALTORS® and their clients. Today’s update highlights jobless claims, housing starts, and housing permits.

■Today continues this week’s good news for the economy. The number of new jobless claims is down by a noteworthy 16,000 to end at 414,000. This decline brings the 4-week average to 424,750, which is 15,000 claims below the same time last month. Still, falling below 400,000 is critical for major improvement in the employment.

■Continuing claims also fell by 21,000 to 3.709 million. If jobless claims stay at their current pace, NAR expects less than 1.5 million net new jobs in the next 12 months, which would barely lower the unemployment rate.

■Housing starts showed some slight improvement in May, increasing 3.5 percent, after a 8.8 percent tumble in April. The annualized pace of housing starts now suggests 560,000 units, which is 3.4 percent decrease from a year ago. The gain was driven by the recovering single-family component.

■Regionally, the West and South drove the increase with the West jumping 18.1 percent and the South increasing 1.5 percent. The starts in the Midwest and Northeast declined 4.1 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively.

■Housing permits were also up, 8.7 percent in May. Permits are now at an annualized rate of 612,000 units which is in fact up 5.2 percent from a year ago. While optimistic news for housing starts signifies a better construction employment situation, there is still a very large unabsorbed supply on the market which needs to be cleared out before significant increases in the new construction.

Wiscasset, Maine. "The Prettiest Villiage in Maine"

Thats what the sign says. There are so many interesting and hostoric houses here, I wonder if the Tucker House is the first to come to mind? Townspeople drive by it every day, who has gone in? I must say I have not, and I have been here almost 10 years. This town is full of grand historic homes, I decided to take pictures one day on the way to Dresden. There used to be bushes in the way of this view, for privacy, I guess, but having them down really opens the land up. The river is to the left.

We all know Maine is FULL of independent individuals, and I have been meaning to post those I see as I travel this great state helping people fulfill their real estate needs. The first one is one taken not by me but by a facebook buddy, Dan D, in Northern Maine last month.

He reports that he knows the individual and that the man's drivers licence has been revoked. That sure didn't stop him! Yes that's a fresh deer for those city folks.
